DSB's Cloud Journey

CLOUDEON has delivered DSB's Cloud Journey - and with it, a new approach to IT handling.

About DSB

DSB is an independent public corporation owned by the Danish Ministry of Transportation and provides public train transport. DSB operates s-trains, domestic intercity trains and international train connections to Sweden and Germany.

  • DSB has more than 195 million passengers every year
  • Staff of approx. 7,400
  • DSB Group generates an annual turnover of approx. DKK 10 billion.

DSB's challenge

DSB was challenged by IT operations changes with long term transitions and migration projects. As a result, DSB wanted to reduce operations risks and minimize further vendor lock-in by moving and consolidating the IT estate to cloud-based infrastructure and services.

From a business perspective DSB wanted to strengthen the ability to build agile customer-centric front apps, utilizing existing backend data, using native Azure platform capabilities, and enable cloud access in a secure and controlled manner to a wider group of business IT developer teams.

Solutions

For at sikre best practice løsninger af DSBs udfordringer, blev projektet håndteret i fire områder:

  • Migrering og modernisering
  • Design og implementering
  • Applikationsmigrering
  • Support og drift

Migration and modernization of IT-infrastructure and platforms

CLOUDEON analyzed DSB’s IT environment and provided a recommendations report for modernizing the IT-infrastructure, pointing out system risks and technical debt, and providing solution and mitigation guidance. The results were used as basis for creating application migration plans and to move groups with the individual DSB System Owners. CLOUDEON has handled a broad spectrum of planning and operations testing activities related to closing or migrating systems to cloud under the Gartner 5R Model.

Cloud Center of Excellence design and implementation:

CLOUDEON has advised DSB on best practice use and implementation of cloud in the organization, building a Cloud Center of Excellence (CCoE). This was initiated through specialized training of employees, workshops and practical examples. A substantial effort was provided to establish contacts to development teams and involving relevant stakeholders within the business. Next step for CLOUDEON has been to produce a design, in corporation with DSB, to support operations of new, cloud-based solutions and ensure that infrastructure and applications integrates with existing solutions at DSB and their providers and partners. The design is comprised by cloud landing zone policies, network and security controls that enable business IT developer teams’ self-service access to secure and compliant cloud services, and automatically secure that solutions are productized and operated according to compliance and regulation.

Application Migration to Public Cloud

CLOUDEON delivered a recommendation report and application migration plan. Together with a risk assessment and an economic evaluation, the plans were implemented and CLOUDEON delivered migration of all DSB’s on-premises applications and servers to the established public cloud based on Microsoft Azure. Through a 10-month period CLOUDEON has migrated 20-30% of the applications and servers deemed ready to public cloud, closed a number of systems and consolidated others, leaving DSB with a more streamlined application- and server platform ready to be operated.

Cloud platforms support and operations:

CLOUDEON has delivered ops design and operations of the new cloud platforms and solutions from planning of policies and governance to automation of infrastructure and platforms deployments using Infrastructure as Code (IaC). The solutions are supported and operated 24/7 from CLOUDEON’s EU based Operations Center.

Outcomes

With the solutions and support from CLOUDEON, DSB has been able to migrate workloads to cloud with minimal down-time and deal with their technical debt as well as streamline the entire IT-environment through best practice recommendations and Gartner 5R methodology. The workload migrations to DSB’s own public cloud Microsoft Azure tenant have reduced the operating vendor lock-in. Moving forward, DSB will have easier, more secure and less costly handovers when changing operations partner as this can be done without the need for another migration.

Applying security controls and policies have enabled business IT developers with self-service access to cloud services and platforms combined with a governance model that enforces the necessary compliance and regulation according to the SDLC phase. All supporting a fast-moving agile applications development and systems integration.
